While services based on and compensated according to QoS have been realized in many different ways for business customers (e.g., via IP virtual private networks (IP VPN)), the coupled structure of networks belonging to various operators worldwide has prevented this on the Internet. But if they are to manage the enormous growth in traffic from mobile networks and fixed networks in the future, network operators are going to have to work for the establishment and standardization of QoS mechanisms going beyond corporate boundaries, demands Dr. Hans-Peter Petry, Head of the business unit Communication Technology and Member of the Executive Board at Detecon International. Otherwise, new turnover potential from the marketing of services which feature controlled quality of service from the sender to the recipient will not be possible in the future.
